Chapter 26 Emergencies
Chapter 26 Emergencies
"Mmm, mmm, mmm..."
In a mansion in Barton, a burly middle-aged man was lying in his room.
...
"What's wrong?" The woman slowly opened her eyes, a hint of confusion in them, and asked in bewilderment.
"I'm a little tired, I'll rest for a bit." The man replied breathlessly, turned over and sat on the bed, picked up a cigar from the counter, lit it, and started puffing away.
"Do you think the law enforcement officers really won't notice?" The woman looked at the man sitting next to her, picked up a blanket from the side, and simply covered herself with it.
"No way, even her lover doesn't know, how could the law enforcement officers possibly know?" The man took two deep drags on his cigar, exhaling clouds of smoke as he spoke.
"That's good, but he's really stupid. He actually thought your wife died enjoying herself in bed, and he didn't even realize he was taking the blame for us." The woman couldn't help but laugh and then snuggled into the man's arms.
"That bitch deserved to die, but it's a pity we couldn't lay a hand on her lover, otherwise we'd be too suspicious."
“No one can control us now,” the woman said, and kissed the man’s lips again, seemingly unconcerned about the lingering smell of his breath from smoking a cigar.
...
Earl Gavin was furious when he thought of his promiscuous wife, who had been having so many affairs behind his back.
"What's that noise outside?" Gavin, who was at a critical moment, seemed to hear some noise outside and asked.
"What noise is there?" the woman asked, her face full of confusion.
“No, I definitely heard something just now.” Gavin had no doubt about his ears; he was certain he had heard something.
"Stop being so paranoid, let's continue," the woman pleaded.
"No, I need to go check first." He was still a little uneasy, and he didn't know if it was because of some guilt or something else, but he had been particularly cautious lately.
Before Gavin could even get out of bed, the bedroom door was opened.
"Who opened the door? Do you have a death wish?" Gavin roared when he saw the open door. However, when he saw who it was, he trembled with fear and his whole body went limp.
"Who are you? Why are you coming in?" Gavin shouted, trembling, as he looked at the figure.
The man didn't reply, but looked at him calmly, as if he were looking at a dead man.
"You want money? Here, take it all. I have lots and lots of money in my safe, and gold bars too. You can take whatever you want." Gavin saw the other man's eyes and got scared, thinking he was there to rob him.
Before Gavin could say anything more, the shadow beneath the man's feet moved. The shadow gradually rose from the ground, facing Gavin, and then a spear sprouted from its palm, instantly piercing Gavin's body.
The gushing blood splattered all over the white sheets and splashed onto the woman's flawless white face.
"what..."
A piercing scream tore through the night sky, but it did not attract the villa's guards to enter.
"Don't kill me, don't kill me, I'll do anything you want. I'll be your slave, I'm very good in bed, look." The terrified woman didn't even have time to wipe the blood off her body, she scrambled to the man's side, and began to flirt with her body.
However, the man didn't seem to appreciate it and turned to leave the filthy room.
Seeing the man about to leave, the woman felt a sense of relief and immediately sat down on the ground, panting heavily.
Before she could make any other move, her head flew to the ground. She stared in horror at her body sitting there motionless, her eyes gradually becoming unfocused.
...
The full moon still hung high in the sky, and the silent night sky seemed unchanged as always. Only this villa exuded an eerie quiet.
The man stepped out of the villa's gate, his gaze falling upon the haphazardly laid corpses of his guards in the yard, a scene of utter chaos. Without a moment's hesitation, he vanished like a ghost into the depths of the night, disappearing silently into the darkness.
...
The first rays of morning sunlight streamed through the window and onto the bed, waking Leon with their glare. He squinted, glanced at the pocket watch beside the bed, and murmured, "It's only 8:30." He rubbed his sleepy eyes, intending to go back to sleep; after all, it was the weekend and he had nothing to do.
However, just as he was about to drift back to sleep, a rapid knocking on the door shattered the morning's tranquility.
"Who is it?" Leon's voice carried a hint of dissatisfaction and curiosity. Why would someone come to see him on the weekend, especially so early?
"Could it be Professor Lian?" Leon pondered, thinking it was very likely, so he quickly got out of bed to open the door.
“It’s me, Philip.” Philip’s voice came from outside the door, dispelling Leon’s guess.
"Why are you here so early in the morning? What do you want?" Leon complained, but at the same time he was also puzzled as to why Philip would come to see him.
“Something’s happened. We’re short-handed, and the other law enforcement officers are busy with other matters. The captain sent me to find you,” Philip said quickly.
Leon hurriedly opened the door. "Come in and wait for me for a moment. I'll quickly wash up and head over right away." He knew it must be something important and didn't dare to dawdle any longer.
"What's wrong?" Leon asked curiously as he was washing up.
“Last night, the entire Earl Gavin estate was brutally murdered, leaving no survivors. The captain received the news this morning and rushed over immediately. Duke Adams takes this matter very seriously and has ordered law enforcement to investigate thoroughly and apprehend the perpetrators,” Philip explained.
In Barton, the Duke of Adams had jurisdiction over law enforcement, while another Duke, Chloe, of equal rank, controlled the city's finances.
“Oh, by the way, a few days ago a countess was said to have died in her lover’s bed, did you know?” Philip asked Leon as if he had just remembered something.
"I heard about it. What's wrong? Are they a couple?" Leon asked, puzzled, when Philip brought it up.
"Indeed it is."
"Is there any connection between these two cases?"
"I don't know, we need to go to the site to investigate before we can make a judgment. The captain rushed over as soon as he received the news."
"By the way, why are you at the Enforcer branch so early?" Leon asked, puzzled. Wasn't this guy a Night Watcher?
"Oh, I don't think I told you. I don't have anything to do on weekends, so I came to the law enforcement to look for work, help out, and earn some extra money." Philip slapped his forehead as he explained, then complained, "But you didn't ask me either. Oh well, never mind. Are you done washing up?"
"Alright, alright, let's get going."
