"Hahaha, this is just something," Song Yixu scratched her cheeks. She didn't mean it to come out like that but it did sound like she was actually showing off. She smiled at Madam Cui and said, "I just wanted to ask if you are doing good, you look sick, Madam Cui."

"Who does not look sick in these conditions?" Madam Cui offered with a tired voice. "The last time the grain warehouse was opened was three weeks ago and everyone was allowed to take only two catties of rough grains and rice. Do you think that this small amount of grains can last for a long time? My family has so many people, those grains were eaten up in a few days."

As she finished speaking Madam Cui clenched her fingers around the carving tool and spat, "If that woman was this incapable then she should not have taken the throne. She had only caused trouble for the entire country and nothing more."

Though Madam Cui did not believe the rumours that this was heaven punishment, as the previous empress was killed by her daughter who proved unfilial—— Madam Cui did agree with the incompetence of Xia Xieren who couldn't even provide grains to her countrymen when they were suffering.

Now they could only wait for the heavens to take pity on them.

Song Yixu's eyes widened as she looked at Madam Cui and asked hurriedly, "Are you saying that you ate weeks ago and ever since then you did not eat anything?"

"It's fine, as long as the kids can eat," Madam Cui sighed. Though she said that, her stomach was churning badly, she could feel the hunger pains rise but with such conditions how dare she act up? If she told her family that she was feeling sick then her children and grandchildren would only feel guilty for eating the grains that she handed them.

Madam Cui still remembered how her daughters kept wheedling her to eat a bowl of porridge but she saved it for her youngest granddaughter.

"It is not fine, Madam Cui," Song Yixu shook her head. She thought about how Madam Cui who was once the national treasure of the country when she was in her twenties. Even the Empress admitted that her skills were best when it came to gold carving and jewellery making.

No sooner did she take out the gold, than Madam Cui's eyes widened and she exclaimed, "This is wonderful quality gold, though it is not a hundred per cent clean as its not been refined but such big ore is really hard to find that too without digging further in the land."

Song Yixu heaved a sigh of relief upon hearing this, she then said to Madam Cui, "That's right. My friend and I are thinking of buying that land to develop the mine. But we did not have any channels to sell it, this is why I thought of you, Madam Cui. However, given your conditions... I think you should come with me."

Song Yixu did not know what she was going to do with Madam Cui and her family once she took them to the Big River Town but she knew one thing, she could not leave Madam Cui behind. She was her mentor and someone who taught her everything, it would be simply heartless of her to ignore the woman who took care of her when she was young and reckless.

Madam Cui was touched by what Song Yixu said to her but she did not want to become a burden on Song Yixu. She was already so old, what was the point of even trying to hang on to life?

She should leave the resources to the young.

"There is no need, even if I go with you. I will only become a burden on you... not to mention my family... it is too big for even me to take care of, how can I ask you to take care of them?" She was not that shameless.
