Chapter 50 The Choices of the Mother and Daughters
Chapter 50 The Choices of the Mother and Daughters
"What? You saw your father?" Mingyue's mother almost dropped the bowl she was washing when she heard Li Mingyue's words.
"Then why didn't you call him? We've finally found your father!" Mingyue's mother said, her eyes brimming with tears.
"But Mother, they abandoned us first. Do you really want to go back?" Li Mingyue finally asked the question that had been on her mind.
Mingyue's mother seemed taken aback by Li Mingyue's words, "But he's your father! What will we do if he doesn't go back?"
Li Mingyue didn't say anything, leaving her mother muttering to herself.
"Big sister, I don't want to go back." Chun Ya also heard what Li Mingyue said.
“Yes, eldest sister, I don’t want to go back either. Dad is good, but everyone else is not.” Cao Ya chimed in.
Li Mingyue stroked her two younger sisters' hair without saying a word.
Is Dad really a good person? If he is, why didn't he stop Grandpa and Grandma from abandoning them?
But then she remembered that when they were at the Li family's house, her father would sometimes go up the mountain to pick wild fruits and bring them back for them.
Li Mingyue didn't know what to do either, and she tossed and turned for a long time before finally falling asleep that night.
"Miss Li, two people have arrived outside. They say they are your father and your uncle. They want to see you. What do you think?" Qin Da sent someone to tell Li Mingyue.
She knew this day would come sooner or later, but she still took her mother and sisters to see the two of them.
"Master!"
"Zhi Niang!"
"Daddy!"
"Spring! Grass!"
Li Mingyue stood to the side without moving, watching the mother, her two daughters, and her father embrace and weep bitterly.
Li Laosan's eyes darted around, and he asked about Li Mingyue.
"Mingyue, why did you leave with the nobleman?"
“My daughters and I were abandoned without food or water, so how could we not rely on this benefactor?” Li Mingyue hadn’t forgotten that the person in front of her was also partly responsible for abandoning her.
"Wasn't that a decision made by your grandparents? Besides, your second brother didn't object." What Li Laosan didn't finish saying was, "Even your own father didn't object, so you can't expect my uncle to object."
Even though what Li Laosan said was true, Li Mingyue still harbored resentment and remained silent.
"Mingyue, what do you eat when you're with these important people? I think I saw you eating white rice yesterday," Li Laosan asked, pretending not to see Li Mingyue.
“Uncle, I know! We had white rice and cured meat yesterday!” Chun Ya heard the question and answered quickly.
“Yes, yes, the day before yesterday we ate white flour dumplings, which Mom made with wild vegetables and cured meat. We even dug up the wild vegetables ourselves!” Cao Ya chimed in, not to be outdone.
Li Laosan's mouth watered at the thought. His second sister-in-law and the others were eating so well; no wonder they had all gotten fat!
"Does that important person need more people? I can go too!" Li Laosan finally revealed his true thoughts.
“Uncle, we don’t know about that. You should ask the important person!” Li Mingyue broke her silence. She felt that Li Laosan was simply delusional.
"Second sister-in-law?"
“Third brother, Mingyue is right. We really can’t help with this. It was only because Mingyue begged a benefactor to accept us.” Mingyue’s mother said awkwardly, looking at Li Laosan’s pleading eyes.
"Then, Mingyue, could you..."
"No! Uncle, what are you thinking? How could I possibly influence the nobleman's thoughts! The nobleman is just taking pity on us, mother and daughter, because we are weak!"
Li Laosan understood Li Mingyue's meaning. They were adult men, and the nobleman had his own guards; how could he possibly accept them?
However, Li Laosan was still unwilling to give up, "Then, Second Sister-in-law, Mingyue, will you come back with us?"
“Yes, Zhiniang, come back with me!” Li Lao Er exclaimed excitedly.
Mingyue's eyes lit up at first, then she hesitated. "Mingyue, what about us?"
"Uncle, you make it sound so easy. When we go back, will there be any food for us at home?" Li Mingyue retorted.
Li Laosan remained silent; the family was still waiting for them to get some food from the important person.
Li Lao Er also fell silent. He knew his mother would never give Zhi Niang any food, and he also knew that the family didn't have much food left.
"Mingyue, look at what you're saying! Aren't you eating rice at the nobleman's place? You can take some back to eat, then you'll have enough food!" Li Laosan tried to persuade Li Mingyue, unwilling to give up.
"Stop! Uncle, you're trying to get us killed! Who are we? We're only allowed to eat rice because the nobleman took pity on us. If we take something from the nobleman, we'll probably be arrested by the guards before we even leave the group. How could you say something like that, Uncle!"
Li Mingyue now understands that her original family members had other plans, and it seems that only her father really wanted them to go back.
"Mother, I'm not going back. I'll still have food to eat and won't be abandoned if I stay with this noble person. You can go back if you want!"
Li Mingyue felt a chill in her heart, and after speaking, she walked towards the group of nobles.
The two younger sisters glanced at their older sister, then at their father and mother, before turning and running after Li Mingyue, calling out, "Big sister, wait for us!"
Don't underestimate them just because they're young; they know who they should follow to ensure they get enough to eat.
"My lord! I..." Mingyue Niang felt somewhat guilty.
She understood what Mingyue was saying; her daughter still harbored resentment.
Li Lao Er looked at his wife expectantly, hoping she would come back with him, but he couldn't guarantee that his mother would provide them with food after they returned.
"My dear husband, I'm not going back either. If I go back, Mother definitely won't give me any food. We... we'll still have food if we stay with the noblemen. My dear husband, please take care. I heard from the noblemen that they're going to Jiqing Prefecture. I'll wait for you there." After saying this, Mingyue Niang left with a heavy heart.
She felt a mix of guilt and relief.
Li Lao Er was heartbroken to see his wife and daughter leave. He couldn't stop them, so he could only squat down and hug his head in resentment.
Li Laosan was speechless at his second brother's good-for-nothing attitude. If you can't keep people around, at least give them something to eat!
The two returned empty-handed to the Li family's group.
"Third brother, have you seen them yet? What did they say over there?" The whole family looked at him expectantly, ignoring Li Lao Er, who was sulking beside them.
"Mother, my second brother and I met with my second sister-in-law and the Mingyue sisters. We asked them, but none of them are coming back!"
"This is outrageous! She doesn't even want her own husband anymore, this Jiang woman!" Old Madam Li gritted her teeth in anger, but dared not make any move because the other party was among the nobles.
"Uncle, do they really eat rice in the procession of the VIPs?" Li Zhuzi asked again, unwilling to give up.
"Not only that, Chun Ya and Cao Ya said they even make white flour dumplings!"
One sentence made the Li family feel envious, jealous and resentful. How could such an important person take a fancy to those mother and daughters!
