Chapter 199: Please Let This Not Be True
Chapter 199: Please Let This Not Be True
A tear of sheer panic rolled down the side of Kelly’s frozen face, his mind screaming for his body to move, but the paralysis kept him locked in place.
"You made my boyfriend who he is today," Adrian rasped, his knuckles whitening around the gun. "All the bad names people call him, all the darkness people see in him, a lot of it traces back to people like you."
His grip tightened around the weapon.
"I could pull this trigger right now and end your miserable life. But I won’t. I refuse to let a piece of trash like you be the reason my own life changes for the worse, just like you changed Matteo’s."
Adrian slowly lowered the barrel, his eyes shifting down to Kelly’s lower body. A brutal, unforgiving look settled over his face. "But I am going to do something you’ll forever regret for the rest of your life."
Adrian deliberately aimed the pistol straight at Kelly’s right knee.
Bang!
The gunshot exploded through the narrow hallway.
The paralytic had frozen Kelly’s muscles, but it hadn’t dulled his ability to feel pain. Agony tore through him the instant the bullet struck.
His jaw strained uselessly against the paralysis, a muffled, strangled sound trapped in his throat as blood spread across the concrete beneath his shattered knee.
"I’ll keep you alive on my side," Adrian whispered, his voice cold and unwavering. "But what happens to you after this is Matteo’s decision, not mine. Whether he keeps you and your brother alive or not... that’s his choice."
He tightened his grip on the gun.
"I’ve lived a painful life for years. I’m not going to become a killer or destroy my future because of people like you. I refuse to carry that regret for the rest of my life."
His eyes dropped to Kelly’s injured leg.
"So this is all I’m leaving you with. Consider it a reminder of the day you decided to destroy my life."
With that, Adrian lowered the gun and turned away.
Every step felt like torture. The drugs were still raging through his body, draining what little strength he had left. Fighting through the dizziness and pain, he staggered toward the exit.
When he reached the door, his heart sank.
A keypad.
He quickly tried several combinations, his trembling fingers punching in random codes.
Nothing.
The lock refused to open.
After several failed attempts, Adrian’s legs finally gave out beneath him. He slid down the wall and collapsed onto the floor, clutching his chest as he struggled to breathe.
From across the hallway, Kelly lay frozen on the ground, unable to move.
The two of them stared at each other from a distance.
One trapped by paralysis.
The other, trapped by exhaustion, pain, and the drugs still tearing through his body.
Adrian leaned heavily against the wall, the heavy pistol still trembling in his weak grip.
Meanwhile, a fleet of cars screeched to a halt outside the safehouse. Matteo, Mark, Tony, and the security detail stormed the building, forcing a handcuffed Kevin ahead of them. When Kevin unlocked the door to the holding room, Matteo’s men immediately swarmed inside with their weapons raised.
Matteo rushed in right behind them, his eyes frantically scanning the space. The room was empty. Adrian was nowhere to be found.
Tony moved quickly toward the table, his eyes locking onto the open, scattered first-aid box. He picked up one of the remaining vials, reading the label, and his face went completely pale. He turned sharply to show Matteo. "Teo, look at this."
Matteo looked at the label, his chest tightening with sudden, suffocating fury. He whirled around to face Kevin. "Did you inject this into his body? Where the hell is my boyfriend?"
Kevin trembled against his handcuffs, his voice cracking. "This... this is where I left them."
"Them?" Matteo repeated, stepping dangerously close. "Who are they? Who is he with?!"
"My brother," Kevin confessed, tears spilling down his cheeks. "My brother was with him before I left. They were supposed to be in this room."
"Check the entire building! Now!" Matteo roared to his men. The guards immediately deployed, splitting up to clear the hallways in a disciplined sprint.
Matteo lunged forward, gripping Kevin’s collar so tightly he nearly lifted him off the floor. "Did you use this on him?!"
"I’m sorry! I’m sorry!" Kevin cried out.
Just then, one of the guards rushed toward Matteo, holding up five empty syringes he had found scattered across the floor.
Matteo’s breath caught in his throat.
His eyes locked onto the needles.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five.
A terrifying silence settled over him as he realized exactly how much they had pumped into Adrian’s body.
His hand tightened around Kevin’s neck. "Not only did you kidnap him..." he whispered.
His voice cracked.
"But you drugged him too."
The room seemed to grow colder.
A murderous fury flashed across Matteo’s face as he looked at Kevin.
"Five doses? You gave him five fucking doses?"
"I’m sorry!" Kevin sobbed, completely breaking down. "My brother and I... we slept with him. I didn’t..."
Matteo didn’t let him finish the sentence. Consumed by a blind, murderous rage, he drew his gun, pressed the barrel directly between Kevin’s eyes, and tightened his finger on the trigger.
"Teo, stop!" Mark shouted, lunging forward and forcefully grabbing Matteo’s wrist, forcing the gun upward. "Don’t do it! You promised you wouldn’t get your hands dirty with blood again. Remember your promise!"
"I don’t give a fuck!" Matteo roared, his muscles straining against his brother’s grip. "He has to die! He needs to die right now!"
"Yes, he will die," Mark urged tightly, looking his twin dead in the eye to anchor him. "But there are a lot of ways to go about this, Teo. Don’t kill him too quickly. Don’t let him off that easy."
For the first time, Kevin didn’t seem afraid.
The terror was still there, but beneath it was something far more dangerous.
Resignation.
He knew there was no escaping this.
No bargaining.
No future awaits him.
If he was going to be destroyed anyway, then he wanted to leave Matteo with a wound that would never heal.
A sick, malicious determination settled deep inside him.
If he couldn’t have Matteo, then he would destroy the thing Matteo loved most.
He would shatter the love Matteo held for Adrian.
Kevin let out a breathless, cruel smirk. "I’m sorry, Matteo... but my brother and I already slept with him. We both took him."
The lie hit Matteo like a physical blow. The words ’my brother and I slept with him’ echoed in his mind, making his ears ring. His grip loosened on his gun as a heavy, agonizing silence filled his chest.
But before the words could fully settle or trigger his rage, a guard’s voice echoed loudly from the end of the hall. "Boss! Over here! We found Adrian!"
The entire group rushed out of the room, tearing down the corridor toward the voice.
Matteo rounded the corner first. He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes first landing on Kelly, who was lying paralyzed on the floor, his knees completely shattered and pooling with dark blood. Matteo looked past him, his gaze finally locking onto the small, curled-up figure further down the hallway.
Adrian was slumped against the wall, with the gun lying on the concrete floor beside him.
Matteo’s expression darkened as his eyes fell on Kelly lying on the floor. "Wow. Interesting," he said quietly.
In a flash, Matteo shoved his gun back behind him and sprinted down the remaining length of the hallway.
He threw himself onto his knees, his hands trembling violently as he reached out and gently gathered Adrian’s weak, shivering body into his arms, pulling him tightly against his chest.
"Baby... Rian, look at me," Matteo pleaded, his voice cracking with an emotion he had never shown anyone before. He brushed the sweat-soaked hair away from Adrian’s pale face, his hands cupping his cheeks.
Adrian’s eyelids felt like lead. His body was completely exhausted and still burning from the fading effects of the drugs. Hearing the familiar deep voice, he fought against the darkness trying to pull him under. Slowly, he forced his eyes open.
The blurry image of the hallway gradually concentrated, and Adrian found himself looking directly into Matteo’s dark eyes, filled with absolute panic, relief, and a desperate, heart-shattering love.
"Baby..." Adrian whispered, his voice barely a breath as his head slumped weakly against his boyfriend’s shoulder, finally safe.
Without a word, Matteo scooped Adrian up into his arms, lifting his weak body effortlessly. He turned back toward the exit and began marching down the long concrete hallway.
He didn’t look at Kelly on the floor, but his voice cracked like a whip as he passed his team. "Bring Kelly. And get Kevin into the other car."
Matteo’s jaw clenched tightly. "They both have questions to answer. I need to be certain about something."
Within minutes, the team cleared out of the safe house. Outside, the car doors slammed shut in a hurried, chaotic rhythm.
Matteo didn’t head back to the main estate with Mark and Tony. Instead, he gave Tony explicit, cold instructions on where to take Kevin and Kelly for questioning.
Matteo split from the main convoy, taking Harry and just a few of his most trusted guards to one of his private, secluded safe houses.
He made a call ahead, so the moment they arrived at the property, a trusted private doctor was already waiting at the door.
Matteo carried Adrian inside and laid him gently onto the master bed.
The doctor immediately opened his medical kit and began testing Adrian’s vital signs and setting up a detoxifying intravenous drip to flush the heavy drugs from his system.
Matteo stood at the edge of the bed, his arms crossed tightly as he watched the doctor secure the IV needle into Adrian’s arm. The bedroom was completely quiet except for the low, steady sound of Adrian’s ragged breathing.
As the fluids began to pump into Adrian’s veins, Matteo’s mind fractured. He couldn’t stop the silence from filling with Kevin’s parting words. The sentence looped in his head, twisting like a knife: My brother and I... we slept with him.
So Kelly and Kevin were brothers. And they had both laid their hands on Adrian.
Matteo walked over to the side of the bed, his boots hitting the floor with dull, heavy thuds. He sat down on the mattress and slowly reached out, brushing the damp, sweat-soaked hair back from Adrian’s pale forehead.
His hand trembled slightly against Adrian’s soft skin.
He stared down at his boyfriend’s bruised, exhausted face, a heavy, suffocating ache settling deep inside his chest.
Please, Matteo thought, a crushing sense of dread settling deep in his chest as he looked at the man he loved.
Please let this not be true.
