Chapter 12 Border Blade Will
Chapter 12 Border Blade Will
Will followed Liu Bei into the camp.
Although the campsite was small, it had everything you needed. At the very center was a campfire, and on either side of the campfire were two tents. One tent was filled with all kinds of books, while the other tent was littered with bloodstained swords, rags, and maintenance oils.
The first thing Will saw when he entered the camp was the wooden table where they ate, or rather, the unfinished roast meat!
Will was born into House Ravengard; his father was the High Duke of Baldur's Gate.
Born into nobility, he naturally recognized that the roasted meat was the Eye Demon's flesh!
Why is the flesh of this bewitching creature rarely seen even on the tables of the nobles of Baldur's Gate?
"Liu Bei, you talk to him." Ansel, without a second thought, carried the unfinished plate of roasted meat into the tent outside, where bloodstained swords lay scattered.
"Then?" Will pointed to the tent, his face unable to hide his confusion.
"Ansel likes to collect loot." Liu Bei invited Will to sit down, and before the campfire went out, he placed a pot full of hot water on the fire. "Wait a moment, let me prepare some tea for you, and we can chat while we drink."
Will sat at the wooden table watching Liu Bei prepare methodically. Before long, the water in the pot boiled again.
"Please! This is new tea from the valley this year."
Liu Bei presented Will with a cup of tea.
Looking at the cup of tea, Will felt that these two adventurers were completely different from the adventurers he knew. They didn't seem to be on an adventure; they seemed more like tourists!
Neither the Eye Demon's flesh nor the new tea from the valley before us are things that ordinary adventurers cannot afford!
"Doesn't it seem a bit extravagant?"
Will's facial expression control wasn't very good, and his little schemes were easily seen through.
"The luxury items you perceive are simply uncommon at Baldur's Gate; in reality, they're readily available at Dagger Beach, so..."
Will naturally understood Liu Bei's implied meaning, and immediately put aside his prejudice, picked up the cup of tea, took a sip, and then said directly, "I heard from Tifflin that you intend to eliminate the goblin army outside the woodlands?"
"Well, with the limited manpower in the woods right now, it's difficult to accomplish this..."
"You need a mercenary! I know where to find one!"
Liu Bei remained silent until he noticed a hint of impatience on Will's face, at which point he asked, "Where are they now?"
"I just left El Toril a few days ago, and judging by the journey, I should arrive at Vol'jin's Hibernation Grounds in the next couple of days."
"I believe you genuinely want to help the woodland, but there's one thing I don't understand: why don't you do it yourself? Why go through me?"
Will did not answer.
Liu Bei didn't press the matter. Judging from the reaction, he guessed that there was something difficult to say, so he changed the subject and asked, "By the way, the Nautilus warship fell from the sky the night before last. Ansel told me at the time that it was a Mind Flayer's warship, but there hasn't been any sign of the Mind Flayers all day. Are you aware of this?"
"I escaped from that Nautilus warship!"
"What?" Liu Bei asked casually, never expecting that he would actually get information about the Nautilus warship.
Could you elaborate?
As if recalling some unbearable past event, Will smiled bitterly and said, "What's wrong with not being able to talk about it in detail?"
"I was originally hunting a demon when I accidentally stumbled upon the Nautilus and was implanted with Mind Flayer tadpoles by the Mind Flayers. Later, for some reason, the warship was teleported back to Faerûn from Avernus and eventually crashed on a cliff outside the woodland. I survived by sheer luck and then made my way to the camp."
"What? You've been implanted with Mind Flayer tadpoles!" Ansel appeared beside them unnoticed and immediately asked, "Tell me quickly, what stage are you in now! This stuff is really hard to cure! In just a few days you'll become a Mind Flayer!"
Will understood Ansel's implied meaning and said with delight, "Do you know how to cure it? You seem to know a lot about it?"
"Of course I know it! There are tons of mind flayers under Waterdeep, it's so annoying!" Ansel said with a look of disgust.
"Can you cure it?"
"Me? I don't know how to cure it! But there are a few people underground in Water Deep who know how. As long as that thing hasn't eaten your brain, you still have a chance to live!"
Upon hearing this, the flame of hope that had been burning in Will's eyes was extinguished again; he had thought that the person in front of him could cure him.
"Tell me quickly which stage you're at!" Ansel asked, a little anxiously.
"I haven't sensed anything unusual yet."
Hearing this, Ansel was confused. "That's strange! Why aren't you reacting at all?"
He counted the dates on his fingers: "By the way, you should have started the first phase by now!"
"Ansel, why are you so concerned about this?" Liu Bei couldn't help but ask. Was Ansel still the same guy who was almost scared to death by the sight of the Nautilus warship?
"Of course I care! This thing embarrassed me last time, I have to get my revenge!" Ansel said matter-of-factly. "I'm just waiting to fight the Mind Flayer! Otherwise, my old man will laugh me to death when he finds out!"
Upon hearing this, Liu Bei and Will burst into laughter simultaneously.
"Is it that funny?" Ansel muttered.
After laughing, Liu Bei said to Will, "Master Halsin's disciple, Nettie, is a physician. Perhaps we could ask her for her opinion."
Will nodded and was about to turn and leave when Liu Bei called him back.
"Let's go with you!"
Will immediately understood Liu Bei's meaning.
Liu Bei was right!
He now has a Mind-Stealing Tadpole implanted in his brain. Although nothing has changed yet, who knows when it will undergo a transformation?
Once the transformation occurs, what happens next is beyond Will's control.
He is still a hero of Baldur's Gate, a hero who once fought in Hell to protect the people, but what about after he becomes a Mind Flayer?
He also didn't want his hands to be stained with the blood of the weak people he had once protected.
Traveling with Liu Bei and his companion would be the best choice!
On the one hand, they could look out for each other on the road; on the other hand, if he were to transform into a mind-stealing demon, Liu Bei and his companion could kill him on the spot, giving him no chance to commit an irreparable mistake!
Even though he is no longer Will after becoming a mind flayer, he is still a demon born from his body!
"In that case, I will travel with you!"
"I just don't know if this young man will welcome me to join!"
Ansel scrutinized Will for a moment: "Although you're a sorcerer, you're definitely a good person! I have no objection!"
"Liu Bei, let's keep this guy; he's got some skills!"
Liu Bei was a little amused and exasperated. This man was a renowned hero of Baldur's Gate, the famous Blade of the Border, but how did he become just a person with some skill in your mouth?
"Oh, right, there's one more thing!" Will suddenly remembered something.
"It's just a devil, no big deal! I've never dealt with a devil before!" Ansel blurted out his thoughts before Will could finish speaking, his eager expression making everyone chuckle.
"You're my friend, so your business is my business!"
"Besides, according to what you've said, he's a ruthless devil; we certainly won't let him get away with it!"
