Chapter 27 Not a Good Person
Chapter 27 Not a Good Person
Under severe interrogation, Ethan quickly broke down.
The source of the possession drug was explained intermittently.
"It was... given to me by a person wearing a black robe!"
"What does he look like?" Kane pressed.
Ethan answered, tears streaming down his face and his voice trembling:
"He had an ordinary appearance, even looking somewhat mild-mannered... He only appeared that one time!"
"tutor?"
The thought had barely crossed Kane's mind when he immediately rejected it.
He remembered the corpse that was now just a head.
But then, in a flash, the figure of the patriarch, who looked exactly like his mentor, appeared.
It made his heart sink slightly.
Ethan was still whispering in fear:
"I had several of my men test the drug... but only Marcus's strength increased..."
Kane frowned and continued to press for answers.
But Ethan could provide no more useful information.
The possession drug has even spread to the outside world.
The Demon Cult...
Kane pondered for a moment, then turned his gaze back to Ethan.
The conversation shifted abruptly, and the perpetrator pressed the other party to reveal the location where they had hidden the money.
After the interrogation, Kane promptly ended Ethan's life.
He looked at the three corpses on the ground, sighed softly, but his brows remained furrowed.
"Although it was a waste of time, I managed to make some money."
"We need to find another small town and figure out how to get a permit to enter the city."
"This identity can still be used for the time being. I have a one-way contact with the Flying Squirrel Merchant Guild, and not many people know about it."
Kane did not hesitate.
Ethan's assets consist mostly of fixed assets and shares in the Chamber of Commerce, much of which require cultivating connections and being handled by trusted confidants.
even so.
He also had more than five hundred gold coins hidden in his small estate, which was a considerable sum.
"Your father's killer is dead, you are safe."
Kane didn't turn around, and spoke calmly.
Footsteps sounded behind me; it was the girl with the vertical pupil in her left eye.
She stared at the corpse on the ground, her expression complex, and after a long while, she whispered:
"Thanks."
Kane waved his hand and turned to walk out of town.
The girl watched his retreating figure, pursed her lips, as if she had made up her mind.
……
Nilfgaard.
Ethan's estate was in complete disarray.
Without the resistance of professionals, the servants and guards in the manor were no match for Kane.
He wore a black robe to conceal his face and charged his way into the heart of the manor.
After killing the two who led the resistance, the rest of the people scattered and fled for their lives.
After all, everyone is working hard for money, and no one wants to die for their employer.
Without delay, he found the secret room as Ethan had instructed.
He packed all the heavy gold coins into his bag, then set it on fire and left.
The flames quickly engulfed the entire manor.
……
The following morning, Kane set off for the next town.
They encountered two soldiers on the road.
As they passed each other, one of them suddenly called out to him:
"Wait a moment."
Kane stopped and quietly reached for the weapon at his waist.
The soldier didn't even look at him; he simply handed him a notice:
"If you see anyone on this, report it to the military camp or the sheriff immediately."
Kane took the announcement and paused for a moment.
Above were sketches of Victor and Marcus.
The bounties are 30 and 80 gold coins respectively.
"What did they do?" he asked.
"These two killed Ethan, the boss of the Flying Squirrel Merchant Guild, and stole several thousand gold coins!"
The soldier suddenly thought of something and said:
"Hey, if only I could get the bounty..."
Kane was speechless for a moment.
He clearly only took five hundred gold coins, so how could it be rumored to be several thousand?
But that's not important. The key question is—who's covering for him?
That girl?
After a moment's thought, he turned and hurried toward the direction where the girl lived.
In the distance, the lights were still on in that little house.
Kane observed for a moment before stepping forward and knocking on the door.
……
The door opened, and the girl came out.
She had a clean gauze covering her left eye, leaving only her right eye exposed, and she looked somewhat nervous.
"You've come!"
A flicker of joy crossed her eyes when she saw Kane.
Noticing his gaze lingering on the gauze, she asked softly:
"Is it ugly?"
"No."
Kane shook his head firmly.
The girl believed it, and a sweet smile bloomed on her face.
Just as the two were about to enter the house, Kane suddenly stopped and looked inside.
A middle-aged man came out.
He was about forty years old.
Wearing leather armor, carrying a two-handed sword on his back, and sturdy military boots on his feet.
His hands were covered in thick calluses, a clear sign of a seasoned soldier.
Kane was not surprised.
This is the person he really wanted to see.
The two stared at each other for a moment, their gazes meeting and scrutinizing each other in the air.
Finally, the middle-aged man spoke first:
"I am Alger, the sheriff of Nilfgaard."
He turned to the girl, his tone softening:
"He's also Zena's uncle."
Having said that, Alger suddenly knelt on one knee, placed his hand on his chest, and solemnly said:
"Thank you for protecting Zena."
Her father was murdered because he helped me investigate the case… I owe him so much.”
Zena stood there, bewildered.
Kane nodded.
He had probably guessed this would happen before he came.
"Get up, I had my own selfish reasons for helping her."
Alger looked puzzled, but still stood up.
Kane then recounted how Ethan had schemed against him, and finally confessed:
"I'm not a good person."
"If the price is high enough, I can't guarantee I won't make a move on her."
Zena froze, staring blankly at Kane.
Alger laughed:
"But you didn't do that in the end, did you?"
"Moreover, people who are willing to admit that they are not good people are usually not that bad."
"True villains never think they've done anything wrong."
Kane tacitly agreed with this statement.
"Kane, what are your plans next?"
Alger inquired.
"I've temporarily covered up your suspicions, but staying in town might not be a wise move."
Kane nodded:
"I plan to go to Shantar, the city of war, and I'm looking for a way in."
"It's not difficult."
Alger nodded.
"You got several thousand gold coins from Ethan. Spend some money to bribe the soldiers, and it'll be easy to solve the problem."
Kane shook his head and truthfully told the truth that he had only taken five hundred.
Alger was taken aback, then didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
After a moment's hesitation, he said:
"If you trust me, I can take you into the city."
Kane remained silent, his mind racing.
Instead of seeking evidence from unfamiliar forces, should he trust the sheriff who covered up the truth for him?
But one must be cautious about going into the city.
If exposed, he didn't think he could escape the soldiers' encirclement.
After all, there were quite a few professionals among the soldiers guarding the city gates.
Alger's gaze was sincere:
"You helped us, this is my way of repaying you."
He paused, then continued:
"Furthermore, I have another request..."
"I hope you can take Zena with you to Shantar to help her find a treatment."
"Given her current situation, staying in the small town would be too conspicuous."
Zena looked at Kane with expectant eyes.
Kane frowned as he looked at the girl, and suddenly thought of Ange.
Until the girl started to feel uneasy.
Kane brought her a glass of water and placed it in front of her, saying:
"Recite this incantation after me, and then imagine it floating up."
Zena nodded nervously.
Kane recited an obscure incantation without hesitation.
The water level then slowly rose by about five centimeters.
This is the water manipulation technique that Shar taught him.
He hasn't fully mastered the trick yet; his recent learning progress is only about 40%.
"Did you write it down? Try it out."
Zena calmed herself down, looked at the water, and then recited the incantation.
The water level rose slowly, starting with one centimeter, then two centimeters...
It eventually rose to six centimeters.
Kane watched this scene with mixed feelings, but quickly calmed down.
He has a system to help him, and he can improve as long as he makes steady progress. There is no need to worry about his magical talents.
However... this girl might be of some help to his plans.
He looked at Zena and said:
"You have a great talent for magic."
"I will help you find a good teacher, and you will become a spellcaster."
"At that time, your problem will no longer be a problem."
"Pack your bags, we're leaving tomorrow."
"Um!"
Zena was very excited.
She no longer wanted to be a monster that ate raw meat.
That night, Kane didn't leave; he taught Zena some basic spellcasting knowledge.
……
That evening, Alger returned home.
He took out a booklet, then pulled out a thick stack of wanted posters, and drew one out from it.
There's a line drawn on top; it's a sign that it's invalid.
The wanted poster featured a young man with a gloomy expression.
If Kane saw it, he would be surprised to find that it was his original form.
Although he is completely different from who he is now.
Alger stared at the wanted poster and muttered to himself:
"The hero whom 'The Lamp Bearer' believed to be dead is actually still alive..."
"And for some reason, they dare not reveal their identity."
"But he is indeed a good person."
He knew he had used Kane, and a hint of guilt flashed in his eyes.
"I'm sorry... this is the only way I can protect Zena."
