Chapter 23: Information
Chapter 23: Information
Adeline was at her friend’s place. She’d personally come to collect the documents she needed from him after contacting him three days ago.
"Did you get all of it?" She asked, looking up at Daniel, who had a mug of coffee in one hand and other documents in his other hand. He sipped it first before responding to her.
"What do you think I would do? Not get all of it?" He questioned back.
Adeline scowled at him but didn’t say anything. He handed her the documents and she quickly scanned through everything.
It turned out the man who’d shot Darien was an ex-military officer who’d been suspended from his work. How he got to the building right next to the estate, facing the patio was a mystery.
But he was certainly there for a mission and that was to kill Darien for a reason she was unaware of. And most importantly, someone must have sent him to do it.
The document showed his age, family, and pictures of his wife and kids. Where he served and the city he was born in, including the school that he went to.
"Were you able to find him?" Adeline asked.
Daniel shook his head. He sipped from his black coffee which made Adeline almost gag in disgust.
She despised black coffee.
"I tried but I couldn’t find him. Perhaps he ran away," said Daniel.
Adeline thought about it. If the assassin managed to run away, things would be bad. However, the information that Daniel provided to her was very useful because now, she can hand it over to Darien and he can use it to find his attacker.
"Thank you," she said with a smile, checking the time. "Don’t you have college to go to?" She asked, frowning when her eyes landed on the time on her golden wrist watch. It was already 11am.
"We don’t have much to do today, and besides, new students are getting transferred there so basically, no classes," he responded.
Despite his young age, Daniel was a good hacker and he was the only one she could turn to to help her with her investigation.
"That reminds me. I have a friend who’s getting transferred. Her name is Samara. Take care of her for me, okay?"
"What do I look like? Some kind of babysitter?" He questioned.
"Please..."
She ruffled his hair before leaving the house, heading to the hospital where Darien was admitted.
She only hoped that this information was good enough for him to bargain, asking her to attend events with him like they were a couple.
She reached the ward and hesitated before placing a knock on the door.
"Come in," she heard.
She pushed the door open to find Darien sitting on the bed, a laptop on his lap already. A man with sleek back hair and a familiar lady with red hair and green eyes, with a striking resemblance to Darien.
"Adeline," Darien called her with that sense of familiarity once again. If he was doing it intentionally, she couldn’t tell.
She gave a curt nod to the woman and the man who were staring at her with questions in their gazes.
Darien sensed Adeline’s discomfort, so he introduced them.
"Tatiana is my sister, and Andrei is my best friend," he introduced.
Adeline wore a more relaxed smile when she heard him.
"Nice to meet you," she said. Then she turned to Darien. "I want to give you something."
She handed him the file in her hands and Darien gave her an awkward look before taking it from her hands.
"What’s this?" He asked as he opened the file.
"That’s the information regarding the person that shot you," she replied, silently biting her lips.
Her words got three heads to turn and look at her with eyes filled with so many questions.
"I had a friend research the man, and that’s what he looks like. We tried searching for him but we couldn’t find him. With this information, it shouldn’t take long for you to find him either," she explained.
A faint smile bloomed on his face, and when he noticed, he quickly adjusted his face.
"Who’s this friend of yours?" Andrei was the one who broke the silence, stepping towards the bed and sneaking a peek at the inked papers.
"A friend of mine," Adeline said firmly.
She didn’t know what Andrei’s intention was but she wasn’t going to reveal Daniel’s identity just like that. He was still a college student and who knew what Andrei wanted from him.
Tatiana snickered from where she was standing, while Andrei’s face darkened when he saw her.
Darien on the other hand wasn’t sure how he was supposed to feel.
She mentioned it was a friend. His guys were telling him it could be a man. And who knew how close they were while finding this information.
"I really appreciate this," he said, closing the file and handing it back to her.
This was the time for Adeline to make her exchange, but she wasn’t sure if she should say it in front of his sister and friend.
She was about to part her lips to speak when she suddenly received a phone call.
’Why now?’ She hissed.
She quickly excused herself and went to answer the call.
Once she saw that the caller ID displayed Theodore, her mood soured.
Hissing under her breath, she answers the call.
"What is it?" She snapped.
Back inside the room, Andrei asked, "Why didn’t you just tell her that you’ve already taken care of that...man?"
Darien grinned. "She personally went and researched about this man just so that I’ll be able to find him."
Andrei couldn’t help but roll his eyes.
"You look quite smitten by her. Don’t tell me she’s the one who broke the bottle on your head?" She guessed. When Darien didn’t respond, her eyes widened. "She’s the one who broke the bottle on your head?!"
"It’s obvious that whoever sent that man is going to send someone else soon and their goal is to get rid of me," Darien said, changing the subject. "Too bad he killed himself right when you caught him."
