mitsuru's dragonfolk swordcraft had overwhelmed lovis at first, but the tide slowly turned against him as time passed. even when backed into a corner, lovis could skillfully dodge mitsuru's attacks by a paper-thin margin, even memorizing the latter's attack patterns.

the biggest difference of all was the mental structure of the two; lovis didn't collapse at all even when he was just inches away from death. while mitsuru's movements became more and more erratic, lovis's movements, on the other hand, gained more and more edge as they fought.

"hahahaha, is something the matter!? i'm not done yet, mitsuru ijyuin!"

lovis kept swinging his scythe even when his body was drenched in his own blood. he entered the zone in his extremely elated state. not even pain and exhaustion could stop him now.

(at this rate... it's only a matter of time before i'm defeated! i have no choice then; let's gamble with that move!)

the steam rising from mitsuru's body then changed from blue to yellow.

"《double》... speed mode!"

he kicked the floor, gaining some distance from lovis.

"you think abandoning your dragonfolk swordcraft now will lead you to victory!? or else, are you getting cold feet now!?"

the swordcraft that mitsuru learned was based on the assumption that he had a tough body like dragonfolk. that's why it could only be used reliably in defense mode. if it was used in any other mode, he would lose his fight due to injury in his limbs.

"this is a gamble, but i have no other choice..."

mitsuru leaped high into the air, kicked the wall behind him, and dashed toward lovis.

"dragonic arts, 《dragon whirlwind fang》!"

"a frontal clash utilizing your speed... is this your trump card? you better not let me down."

lovis took a half-body stance, pointing the blade of his scythe at mitsuru. if mitsuru came right from the front, all he had to do was parry mitsuru's greatsword and unleash a counter.

"《double》... assault mode!"

mitsuru suddenly changed his 《double》 in mid-air. at the same time, he spun his body with his greatsword pointed toward lovis.

"wha–!"

yozakura glared back at mitsuru with half-opened eyes.

"s-stop it, yozakura... don't interfere with lovis-sama's battle! and please don't make it look like lovis-sama has a strong attachment to his life!"

"i only said that i don't want to see the soul of the virtuous warrior that i admire, lovis-sama, getting tarnished. i don't care about myself getting tarnished. do you think i'm just a naive girl who isn't prepared to fight three opponents at once?"

"sorry to tell you this, but you made a great mistake if you think i'm exhausted after fighting that guy. i can still send you together to hell to accompany him."

said mitsuru as he readied his stance again, at that moment. lovis stood up on his feet again, walking to yozakura with stuttering steps.

"lovis-sama, you are sti—kyaaa!"

the bloodstained lovis shoved yozakura to the side with his scythe. blood danced in the air and yozakura rolled on the ground.

"you bas*tard... so that's how you treated the loyal subordinate who wanted to protect you."

"this is my apology for having that stupid lackey of mine interrupting our battle."

lovis spun his scythe and then stabbed his own abdomen. his torn clothes dyed red from the gashing bright red wound. even though he had just inflicted a gashing wound on his own body, lovis laughed happily as he readjusted his stance.

"now then, let's resume the best fight of our lives, mitsuru."

he should be on the verge of death, drenched in his blood. and yet, that didn't make him slower. he was moving as if there were strings wrapped around his body, moving him.

"tch, drop dead already... ain't ya crazier than i thought. fine then, bring it on."

mitsuru was bluffing his way out, but his expression was grim. lovis was struck down by 《dragon whirlwind fang》 and fell unconscious, and yet he stood up again, wrapped in a bizarre aura.
