Chapter 2018 You Can Die Now
Chapter 2018 You Can Die Now
The candle burned to the end of the wick, and the last bit of light shrank and completely blended into the night.
Yan Ruyu sat by the stone table. The chirping of insects had long since stopped and it was completely dark, but Huo Changhe still hadn't returned.
"How about... wait a little longer?" Su Shengsheng walked over and lowered his voice. "He's always been sensible. Maybe he's been held up by something. If before dawn..."
Yan Ruyu looked up, her eyes red from staying up late. "I can't wait. He promised me before he left that he would be back soon. If there's no news so late, something must have gone wrong."
She stood up and straightened her clothes. "I have to go to the west col to take a look."
Su Shengsheng stood up, a look of embarrassment on his face. "But none of us has ever been to the col. The roads on the island are very winding. We're walking in the dark in the middle of the night. What if..."
"I know the way."
The voice came from the door. Mu Wan was standing there, holding half a piece of cake in his hand. His shoulders were slightly hunched, and he looked as timid as usual.
Seeing everyone looking at her, she lowered her voice again: "I haven't been there, but I heard from people on the island during the day that it shouldn't be difficult to find. I... I can lead the way."
Yan Ruyu nodded: "Okay, I'll trouble you then."
Su Shengsheng said quickly: "I'll go too. More people means more strength, and they can help if anything happens."
"No." Yan Ruyu shook her head. "There are still more than a dozen girls in the courtyard. They were all just rescued and are very scared. Someone has to stay here to take care of them. You are careful, so it's most appropriate for you to stay."
She turned to look at the silver ingot: "Come with me."
Yinding immediately straightened his back: "Yes!"
"Can he do it?" Su Shengsheng didn't lower his voice, and Yin Ding heard it as soon as he said it.
Yinding paused and turned to look at Su Shengsheng, his eyes full of confusion. "Why do you insist on saying that I'm not capable? What's wrong with me?"
Su Shengsheng opened his mouth to refute, but Yin Ding spoke first: "I saved you today."
Su Shengsheng's face flushed a little. He turned his eyes away and muttered, "That's two different things." In the end, he didn't insist anymore and just told Yan Ruyu, "Then be careful. I'll be watching in the yard."
The three of them walked out of the courtyard, and the night was as dark as if it were soaked in ink.
Yan Ruyu walked in front, her steps steady. Yinding followed beside her, tugging at her collar from time to time, muttering, "It should be fine, don't worry."
Yan Ruyu didn't respond, only occasionally looking back at Mu Wan who was following behind her: "Is this the right way?"
Mu Wan had been lagging behind for the entire time. Hearing the question, he quickly nodded, his voice still timid. "Yes...just a few dozen steps ahead, and you'll reach the first bend. Turn around and you'll see the old millstone to the west of the village. Follow the path next to the millstone, and you'll reach the second bend."
Yinding glanced back at her and said, "You've never been there, yet you remember it so clearly. Don't make a mistake and lead us into trouble."
Mu Wan lowered her head and clenched the corner of her clothes with her fingers: "No...I won't remember it wrongly. They mentioned it several times and I wrote it down."
After walking for about a quarter of an hour, I saw the old millstone as expected. After turning two corners, a crooked locust tree appeared in front of me, and its shadow was cast crookedly on the ground. Under the locust tree was the entrance to the valley. It was as dark as a bottomless pit, and there was not even a trace of light.
Yan Ruyu stopped and looked into the valley, but saw no one and heard no movement.
Yinding came over and stretched his neck to look inside. "No one is there? Did we come to the wrong place?"
Yan Ruyu frowned and lowered her voice, "There really is no one here. He clearly said he would come to the valley to investigate. Even if he didn't find any information, he shouldn't be so quiet."
Yin Ding looked inside: "Then I'll go in and take a look? Maybe it's still in there."
"Need not."
A voice came from the side, neither Yan Ruyu nor Yinding.
The two turned around and saw Mu Wan standing three meters away from them. He didn't hunch his shoulders like before, but stood straight. His voice was no longer timid, but it was calm, yet revealed an indescribable coldness.
"Maybe dead."
Yan Ruyu's gaze instantly fell on Mu Wan, and her tone turned cold: "What nonsense are you talking about?"
The moonlight just leaked out from the gap in the clouds and sprinkled on Mu Wan's face.
The timid look he had before completely disappeared. His face was calm and without any ripples. There was no more timidity in his eyes. Instead, they were like ice, with obvious viciousness.
She met Yan Ruyu's gaze, her tone still calm, yet the air became tense: "How can this be nonsense? No one can survive here."
Yan Ruyu took a step forward and stared into her eyes. "What do you mean? What do you mean no one can survive here? Did you know there was something wrong here?"
Mu Wan didn't rush to answer, but just raised the corner of her mouth slightly. The smile was completely different from her previous one. There was no gentleness at all, only indifference.
"Do you think anyone can enter here? You came to the island hoping to find out its secrets, but you didn't know this was a trap from the start."
Yinding was listening nearby and couldn't help but ask, "What nonsense are you talking about? What trap? Who are you?"
Mu Wan turned to look at him, the viciousness in her eyes becoming more obvious, "It doesn't matter who I am, what matters is that he won't be going back today.
It should be said that you can’t go back today.”
She paused, adding a hint of sarcasm to her tone: "Just like him, stay here forever."
Yan Ruyu's hand quietly pressed on the dagger at her waist, her eyes fixed on Mu Wan. "You are not a victim, are you in cahoots with those people? Were you pretending to be timid before?"
"Pretending?" Mu Wan repeated softly, as if finding it funny. "You're right. I'm acting with you guys, and it's so tiring."
She looked at Yan Ruyu, "But things are different now. Now that you've found this place, there's no need to pretend anymore."
Yinding took a step forward and wanted to speak, but was stopped by Yan Ruyu.
Yan Ruyu looked at Mu Wan, her tone no longer cold, but more inquiring. "Why are you going through so much trouble? If you want us dead, you can just do it directly. There's no need to say so much."
Mu Wan's eyes flickered, but he didn't answer directly. He just looked into the depths of the valley and spoke in a softer voice, "Because... I want you to know how stupid you are. You thought you could figure everything out, but you still ended up here."
She turned her head and looked back at the two of them: "Okay, I've told you everything I need to say."
"Now, you can die."
After she said that, she took up a chain from her neck. The pendant on the chain was a piece of snow-white bone whistle.
Put it to your lips and blow it gently. The sound of the whistle penetrates the night and reaches the depths of the valley.
In an instant, darkness seemed to surge.
